When I moved to South Florida, one of the things I was most looking forward to was ready access to good bagels and lox. I read reviews of Flakowitz Bagel Inn, and it was high on my list of places to try. Bex and I went for breakfast last Saturday.

I ordered the Mini Nova plate with an onion bagel, and Bex had the corned beef hash. The bagel itself was pretty good. It was easily the softest bagel I've ever had. My only complaint was that the mini nova platter was a bit skimpy on the portions. It wasn't even enough salmon to cover both halves of the bagel it came with. (I couldn't bring myself to order the full nova or lox platters, which started at $15, as I recall.)

Bex's corned beef hash was not my favorite, either. The hash itself was chopped very fine, and ended up sitting on the plate in a single blob. The potatoes it was served with were soft and uninteresting.

I'm willing to give Flakowitz another shot, but will probably return for lunch or dinner. I've definitely had better breakfast in town.

Let me know if you find really good bagels anywhere here. Jill and I have tried a number of mom and pop shops that universally suck. We just go to Einstein's now.

Theres a place on the corner of University/Commercial, I forget the name (which I know doesnt help), but they have great bagels and make the best bagel sandwiches around.

Did you ever try that bagel place on Linton near Federal (Bagels & !)? It's actually not bad. Not great but pretty good. The line is usually out the door on Sunday mornings.

When we lived in Florida, we always thought Bagel City South on SW 18th between Powerline and Military was decent.

Theres a place called "Moes's Bagels" and I dont know if theyre around anymore, but if they are, stay away. Far away. They may entice you with their fancy drive thru, yes its a breakfast place with a drive thru, but unless you like microwaved eggs on your burnt begals, I would not eat there. They are basically equivalent to Einsteins Bagels, but worse when it comes to the actual food.

In Coral Springs there is a few good bagel shops. One is called bagelland. On wiles road and riverside drive. There is also a good mom and pop Bagel place in coconut creek. Really good whitefish salad too. Its in a publix shopping center at the corner of Coconut Creek parkway and Lyons. I cant remember the name they are only open for breakfast and lunch.
